URGENT food aid is needed in some parts of the country to avert a looming humanitarian catastrophe, as it is now evident that some districts will not harvest anything but food distribution must not be politicised in view of the coming elections.
Hunger is looming in some parts of the country particularly in Matabeleland South and North, Masvingo And Midlands provinces where crops were a write-off. The offices of the governors countrywide are busy assessing the situation on the ground.
In Matabeleland South, there was an all- stakeholders meeting on Monday where it was revealed that the province, one of the hardest hit, would require more than 9 000 tonnes of food aid per month. During the meeting, it emerged that all the seven districts in the province would need food aid, with crops in some areas already declared a write-off while some areas have already run out of pastures for livestock. The situation is so desperate in the province that some farmers are already selling their livestock.
The looming drought comes at a time when the inclusive Government is considering holding elections some time next year in view of the expiry term of the Global Political Agreement. In a meeting last week with media organisations operating in the country, President Mugabe announced that the country would hold elections some time next year with or without a new constitution. The announcement would see political parties sharpening their campaign tools.
