Zim commemorates Consumer Day

ZIMBABWE yesterday joined the rest of the world in commemorating the World Consumer Rights Day with the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) calling for maximum protection of the consumers’ money in banking institutions.
The day is commemorated every year on 15 March in more than 150 countries and this year it ran under the theme “Our Money: Our Right”.
The executive director of CCZ, Ms Rosemary Siyachitema, said this year's commemorations were targeted at the way in which the banking sector was keeping consumers’ money.
“We are demanding maximum protection of Our Money that we put in the banking sector. There should be transparency and security in the banking sector. They should also offer protection to the consumers so that when there is a crisis like the world recession consumers will be able to get their money,” she said.
Ms Siyachitema bemoaned bank charges in the country, which she said were too high, compared to those in other Southern African Development Community countries.
“We have received a number of complaints from consumers who are saying the bank charges are too high. Some consumers say when they go to withdraw their money they are given small amounts as some of it would have been deducted as bank charges.
“The bank charges in the country are too high compared to the Sadc average charges,” she said.
